‘Drowning Game’ Uses Horrific Scenario To Promote Life Jackets

Life jacket company, Sortie En Mer, has gone beyond the call of terror just to show the importance of wearing a life jacket. They do this by presenting a horrific scenario through a game. It’s initiative: make sure you don’t drown.

The initiation of the movie is quite optimistic. Through a first-person view of a sailor on a yacht, a friend comes up from below deck and notes the beauty of the weather. The sailor than asks his friend to take the helm while he goes to the front of the boat to adjust some sails. The story turns horrific as the boom knocks the sailor into the sea. He is left floundering in dismay as his friend tries to turn the boat around all in a failed attempt.

Drowning Simulator

This is where the drowning game technically begins. On the right side of the screen, a graphic shaped like a balloon on a string appears. The player now has to scroll the mouse wheel to prevent the sailor from drowning. As the video progresses, the sailor becomes more frantic, and even curses. He will do things in an attempt to stay afloat. This includes pulling his shoes off to make himself lighter. It doesn’t do him any good because the water is freezing cold, ergo he now has to rub his feet to bring feeling back into them.

The result of the drowning game is always the same: the sailor will drown. At the end of the drowning game, the player is given a time on how long they were able to keep the sailor afloat. This writer actually tried it out and only lasted a little over five minutes. I will say that the drowning game seemed to have lasted longer, but I believe the reason for the time is to show that it doesn’t take long for someone to drown.

Other websites have even incorporated their input on the “drowning game”. Kotaku understood what Sortie En Mer is trying to show, but also wrote they were probably trying to promote Guy Cotten yachtwear too. The Verge opted out of posting a personal opinion and instead did a dramatic writing of the “drowning game”.

In conclusion, this “drowning game” may be something of importance because the statistics for death by drowning are jarring, as reported here on The Inquisitr. If it isn’t the statistics that scare people, maybe a scenario presented in a “drowning game” will make people wear their life jackets.
