Hybrid Cars in China, A Growing Trend

Hybrid vehicles are becoming much more popular these days. And the trend is not solely based in the United States, where the hybrid engine originated, but is now quite popular in other countries as well.

Although hybrids have topped the popularity list of cars sold there, recently there have been wide-scale efforts by foreign and domestic makers of automobiles to sell all types of cars in China. The main reason hybrids have come to the top of this list is the need to cut down on all the pollution being caused by the excessive use of fossil fuels in the region. It’s not hard to discern the reason for that consumption when you consider just how many cars are owned and operated there.

Below is a chart found on International Business Times which shows the number of new car purchases in 2013 in both the U.S. and in China. Even though the December figures are not reported here, it is still clear to see just how lucrative the car market in China is. It’s equally obvious to see why the country could benefit from the use of hybrids vehicles.

The use of the hybrid car offers drivers about a 50 percent reduction in fuel costs, especially if the driver practices sensible driving techniques such as powering down when the vehicle is not moving for an excessive period of time while in traffic. Additionally, because the hybrid vehicles uses an electric engine, they are much more efficient than their fossil fuel consuming counterpart. With so much potential for sales in this market, it’s no big surprise that Chinese factories have already begun to build car parts for the hybrids that will influx their market in the upcoming years. Bids for cornering the Chinese market have come from such companies as Toyota, Honda, GM brands, BYD, Audi, and even Lamborghini.

Also to join the hybrid car market in China is Jaguar. The company recently has made a hybrid diesel range rover, pictured above, which it plans to introduce near the end of the year. The North America President for Jaguar Land Rover, Andy Goss, hopes this new vehicle will make a strong impression on the growing market for hybrids in China.

For those who don’t know, GM introduced the concept of the hybrid diesel back in 2003, and the engine was used predominantly for light military vehicles. Mercedes Benz came out with electric light trucks in 2004, and over the following years hybrids began to pop up everywhere as people became aware of their potential.
