‘GRID Autosport’ PS4, Xbox One Not Happening, Says Codemasters

GRID Autosport for PS4 and Xbox One won’t be happening, says Codemasters, and their reason is a solid one. They don’t want to rush it. The only racing they want for their latest title should be done by the gamers playing it.

One factor that most of the first wave of current gen titles faced was that the developers were expected to deliver a complete next level experience in the same development time as those from a year ago. It was unfamiliar hardware for them, so they had to learn to make the process work as well. Why else was nearly every launch title for the PlayStation 4 and Xbone merely a port of its last gen cousin? Sure, we received higher definition and better sound in titles like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Call of Duty: Ghosts, but those may have been the only improvements they had time for.

Until developers learn to program for the new consoles, we can’t expect them to deliver high quality material too quickly, and Codemasters isn’t trying that with GRID Autosport. PS4 and Xbox One versions have been left in the dust as they proceed to make the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions as good as possible.

The GRID Autosport release date for the versions they are committed to has been announced as June 27, and they claim it won’t be a rush job. The developers had this to say about their choice to keep it off the PlayStation 4 and Xbone:

“Regarding next-gen, ultimately it comes down to a few things. The first is that we genuinely want our first next gen outing to be something really great, we don’t want to have to rush and only put out a handful of tracks. We’ve got 22 locations in [GRID] Autosport, the bulk of those are real world circuits, would all those have made it if we were to support next gen? Doubtful.

“Secondly, we’re working our tech for next-gen now, as such, we’re not quite ready. Again, we don’t want to rush. Thirdly, after GRID 2 we sort of had something to prove, we wanted to leave the ‘old gen’ with a bit of a bang so to speak.”

Codemasters also said that they intently read everything being written about GRID 2, even reviews, and took it into consideration. In that way, GRID Autosport was literally made from feedback by actual gamers and critics, and could be the best in the series. This should inspire confidence that when a PS4 or Xbox One GRID Autosport follow-up comes along, it will be good enough to actually convince us it wouldn’t work on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

It may not be the highest definition racing title available, but this one won’t be limited by Codemasters’ lack of experience with the current gen consoles. Even though GRID Autosport PS4 and Xbox One won’t be made, it could easily rival Gran Turismo when the next one comes along.
