Name My Daughter Internet Vote Winner: Cthulhu All-Spark

Name my daughter. Asking the Internet to name your daughter is beyond gutsy, but that didn’t stop one expectant Canadian dad from rolling the dice and seeing what the good people surfing the ‘net would come up with – and the winner is…..Cthulhu All-Spark.

A Yahoo Tech report says that the father, named Stephen, explained his thinking this way:

“I was sitting on the end of the bed after coming home from work and the idea hit me. I tend to be very forward person – this gets me in a lot of trouble – and I just blurted it out — ‘Hunny, I am going to ask the internet what we should name our daughter! She was supportive right from the start. I think at first she didn’t think I was actually going to do it. But once the domain was registered she knew it was real. Hell, when I saw that namemydaughter.com was available I just knew that was the sign that I HAD to do it.”

Really, Internet users? Cthulhu All-Spark? Where in the world do Internet users come up with something like that for a name my daughter Internet vote?

For those not deeply entrenched in geek culture, Cthulhu is a fictional creature – fans alternately call it an elder god or a cosmic entity – that first appeared in a story by H.P. Lovecraft in a 1928 issue of Weird Tales, a pulp magazine. Cthulhu is popular with fans of fantasy, sci-fi and offbeat horror. The character and the world Lovecraft created around it is represented in books and role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and Call of Cthulhu. Lovecraft’s story described Cthulhu like this:

“A monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind.”

Yes, a young expectant father asked – trusted – Internet users to name his baby and they chose Cthulhu All-Spark. No word on whether the mother divorced him.

So did the couple go through with the winning name?

Fortunately, the father had a little more foresight than that. His website, which also announced the birth of the baby on 3:42 A.M. Pacific Standard Time on April 7, 2014, phrased the original namemydaughter.com proposition to let the Internet name his baby daughter like this:

“Hi, My name is Stephen and much to the disbelief of my wife, I have decided to let the internet name* my daughter. Yeah that is an asterisk, Unfortunately internet I know better than to trust you. We will ultimately be making the final decision, Alas my daughter shall not be named WackyTaco692. Sorry guys the wife wouldn’t go for a free for all. [sic]”

So, what did the couple who gave the privilege to name their baby daughter to Internet users name their child?

Amelia Savannah Joy McLaughlin.

While not quite as epic as Cthulhu All-Spark, it did come in second place.

So, how would you have handled it? Assuming you were crazy enough to ask the Internet to name your baby daughter, what would you do if the name my baby Internet vote left you with something like Cthulhu All-Spark?
