Wild vs Avalanche hit the ice tonight at 9:30 P.M. Eastern Time for game two of the opening series of the 2014 NHL Playoffs. That’s 8:30 for those of you in Minnesota and 7:30 for those watching in Colorado. The Avs took game one of the Avalanche vs Wild series with a 5-4 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild.

The Avalanche made a late charge past the struggling St. Louis Blues and the Chicago Blackhawks, edging both for the top spot in the Western Conference’s Central Division. The Wild rode a late season rally to take one of the conference’s two wildcard spots.

Look for more stellar play by Avalanche forward Paul Stastny, who scored the tying goal to send game one into overtime with 13 seconds remaining and then scored the game winning overtime goal. According to an AP report, Stastny was quick to deflect credit to a heads-up play by his teammate, defenseman Erik Johnson, whose hustle saved an empty net goal that would have sealed a W for the Minnesota Wild: “If that doesn’t happen, that hustle out of E.J., we’re not here in this moment.”

Here’s what Johnson had to say about the play that saved the day in game one of the Avalanche vs Wild series:

“I didn’t think I could get it, then I turned on the afterburners and it slowed down and turned on its edge and I was able to make a last-ditch, desperation effort. That’s just one of the plays in the game that was fun to make and help the team win.”

The Minnesota Wild come into tonight’s game in Colorado desperately needing a win. Although they’re only down 1-0, the Avs also have home ice advantage. The Wild will need to find a way to win at least one on the road to have any chance of advancing to the next round of the Stanley Cup playoffs to face the winner of the St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks series.

Expect the Wild to come into game two fired up and ready to go for that first win. This is a team that had to fight to get in and they’re used to having their backs against the boards.
