Cops Use FedEx to Transport Dope… Can You Guess What Happened Next?

Someone on Long Island is probably really high right now.

Procedure surrounding the handling of evidence is being eyed in a case on Long Island right now because some key evidence in the case disappeared in the chain of custody. A drug case is now “completely unprovable” because marijuana seized was being shipped to a crime lab using FedEx instead of official channels.

While the exact fate of the trees isn’t known, at some point after shipping, the weed was extricated from its package and the package resealed. A police spokesman said the case is now under review to determine whether the use of non-police transport for such a matter is appropriate:

“It just calls into question the propriety of dealing with a common carrier, like FedEx, for purposes of delivering evidence,” [investigatory committee head Marc] Gann told 1010 WINS. “Perhaps a better course of action would be to use an employee of the police department or the county.”

Gann added:

“It raises a broader issue about the credibility of the evidence in those other cases that were being transported along with the marijuana,” he said.

The Nassau County District Attorney’s office and FedEx are investigating the incident. Cops did not disclose what quanity of pot went missing during shipment, or the approximate street value of the weed.
