New Nokia Phones Code Named Superman, Moonraker Appear

Nokia might be getting absorbed by Microsoft but there is little indication that the Nokia brand itself is going to die. After facing a lean patch during its transition from Symbian phones to the complete different platform that is Windows Phone, there are signs that the company is on the road to recovery. Last week, Nokia also announced three new Windows Phone-powered handsets – the Lumia 930, the Lumia 630 and the Lumia 635 – and chances are, the launch spree from Nokia would continue in the months to come as well.

Folks from Evleaks also seem to agree with us and have recently posted details about a bunch of new upcoming Nokia devices. While they have not actually talked about the specifics about these new Nokia phones, the only thing that stood out was the naming scheme these phones had. Nokia is naming its upcoming devices after characters from popular fictional characters. The new devices refer to Superman, James Bond, and characters from Filipino soap operas.

Evleaks specifically talks about a few devices that are under development right now at Nokia, which are internally called the Ara, Leo, Moonraker, Onyx, Peridot, Superman, Tesla, and Vantage. Now, it is still unclear whether these devices are all members of the Lumia family or belong to the low cost Nokia Asha series or even the newly added Android powered Nokia X series. It could also be possible that all these devices span all of these various platforms.

If you are not much of a movies guy or hate watching TV, “Moonraker” is a reference to a James Bond novel and 1979 film, originally named after a type of sail on a ship as per CNET. Onyx and Peridot are precious stones. Tesla is of course named after master inventor Nicola Tesla – famous for also being the inspiration behind electric car company of the same name. Vantage also has a James Bond connection, with the sports car Aston Martin Vantage being a regular fixture in those movies. Perhaps the most interesting addition by Nokia here are Ara and Leo – both of whom are characters from a 2003 Filipino soap opera “Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas”. Looks like Nokia has a lot of employees from The Philippines! Oh and yes, people at Nokia seem to love Superman movies as well.

It is yet unclear whether these devices would shed their internal Nokia code names and turn into something else by the time Nokia decides to launch them! What do you think about these interesting new code names by Nokia?
