Lil Wayne Signs Openly Gay Rapper

Looks like Lil Wayne has signed the first openly gay rapper. Proving that he can still change the hip hop world, Lil Wayne decided to sign Fly Young Red to his record label Cash Money. The openly gay rapper is already getting some major attention as it is. Besides being a rarity in the hip hop world, the video for his single “Throw That Boy P—y” has gone viral and has been viewed more than 600,000 since being uploaded to YouTube on March 18.

The views alone has put Fly Young Red on the map in the hip hop world. For Lil Wayne, the fact that the rapper is openly gay is not an issue, and it didn’t hinge on his decision to sign Fly Young Red.

Lil Wayne was quoted by 24HourHipHop when detailing why he decided to sign the young rapper. According to Wayne it’s all about the talent, and everything else comes second.

“Good music is good music. Gay, straight, black, white, blue or purple. Good music is just good music. Have you ever been in the club when that joint came on? N—-s go crazy when that drop. I had to make him YMCMB [Young Money Cash Money Billionaires].”

Fly Young Red has already received exposure outside of YouTube. The rapper went on Fusion’s AM Tonight program to talk about his signing with Lil Wayne and what he hopes will come out of his newly inked deal. Of his video, Fly Young Red was very specific about where his inspiration came from.

“I decided to create the video because I would go to gay clubs and I would see a lot of gay guys dancing to hip-hop music that rappers were talking to females. And I felt like, you know, I’m a gay rapper, I’m coming out with an album, I need a club song and I need something that everybody can dance to. And I wanted to direct the song directly to the gay guys who were dancing.”

Probably the most important message to come from Lil Wayne’s new protegé is what he has to say about the general taboo nature of gay culture being discussed in hip hop, before pop rapper Macklemore made it open and cool to discuss.

“Gay people who listen to hip hop, they shouldn’t have to change the word from girl to guy. They should have their own music, and I want to provide that outlet for them.”

In addition to Fly Young Red Lil Wayne also recently signed new artist Euro.
