Lil Wayne To Co-Headline 2014 Summer Jam

Just one day after Lil Wayne’s “I’m retiring… Psyche!” April Fool’s Day tweet, it was announced that the Young Money CEO would be co-headlining this year’s Summer Jam alongside Nikki Minaj.

Summer Jam is essentially Hip Hop’s answer to Coachella, and every year it manages to bring in an impressive line-up of A-Listers. This year is no exception.

In addition to Lil Wayne and Nikki Minaj, the 2014 Summer Jam main stage will feature Wiz Khalifa, Trey Songz, DJ Mustard with YG and Ty Dolla $ign, Kid Ink, Sevyn Streeter, Troy Ave, Action Bronson, and Bunji Garlin. 50 Cent will also be doing a full set of his earlier material, as will The Roots. Perhaps the most anticipated set of the upcoming show so far will be Nas, who is planning on performing the entirety of his 1994 classic Illmatic in honor of its 20th anniversary.

Nikki Minaj was due to headline the event in 2012 but canceled her show at the last minute when a deejay at Hot 97 made a comment that enraged Lil Wayne, her friend and mentor. Lil Wayne vowed that nobody on the Young Money Entertainment roster would grace the stage that year, and he made good on his promise. At the time, both Lil Wayne and Nikki Minaj were slated to appear alongside other YME notables Cam’ron and Birdman. However, Lil Wayne worked out his difference with Hot 97, and both he and his protege made an appearance on stage last year.

As is the case each year, the Summer Jam’s Festival Stage is almost a big enough event in its own right. This year on the Festival Stage lineup includes actor and comedian Donald Glover’s alter ego Childish Gambino, whose latest album Because The Internet managed to momentarily shut the mouths of a lot of his more vocal critics. Iggy Azalea, Nipsy Hussle, Chinx, Mack Wilds and August Alsina will also appear on the smaller stage, which will kick off a few hours before the Main Event. Rounding out the Festival Circuit stage will be breakout singer Jhene Aiko, whose latest single ‘The Worst’ is currently careening towards Billboard’s Top 40.

Summer Jam will take place this year on Sunday June 1st, in East Rutherford New Jersey, at the Met Life Stadium. Tickets went on sale on Friday.

As was reported last month, while Lil Wayne’s latest album ‘Tha Carter V’ was originally scheduled for a May 5th release date, it has been since pushed back. If the album’s new release date is any further out than the Summer Jam concert, fans will doubtlessly be waiting with bated breath to see exactly how much, if any new material Lil Wayne will end up performing that night.
