Worst Fear: Girl, Ella, Gets Stuck In Drain Trying To Get her iPhone
How far would a 16-year-old go to retrieve her cell phone? Evidently as far down as a drain will let her go until she gets stuck. That’s what happened to this teenage girl, Ella Birchenough in Dover, Kent. According to DailyMail.co.uk, Ella was taking her dog for a walk while talking on her cell phone. Upon finishing her conversation, Ella starts to put her phone in her pocket, but much to her dismay, it slips out of her hand and slides into a drain.
Ella had just recently purchased the phone, two weeks prior to be exact, and was under a new contract. “I thought to myself, ‘I’m not leaving this’ and I jumped down to get it,” reports DailyMail.co.uk. So, Ella removed the cover to the drain and headed in feet first down the hole. As Ella tried to reach the phone to pick it up with her feet, and pushing herself further down, she realized she was stuck.
As a crowd began to emerge, laughing, no less, at Ella stuck waist down in the drain, someone did call Ella’s mom, Joanne. NYDailyNews.com reported that when Joanne received the call that Ella was stuck in a drain, she was horrified thinking that Ella could sink. But upon arriving at the scene and realizing Ella was OK, Joanne said, “I just burst out laughing. I was laughing my head off, but I knew she was going to need help to get out so I called the fire brigade,” per NYDailyNews.com.
One witness, Tim Richards, describes the event to BBC.com as “a comedy gold moment.” He had tried to lift Ella out, but had no success. Ella’s rescue was short and sweet. Kent Fire and Rescue were able to free Ella within ten minutes of having received the call. Her phone, however, was smashed to bits.
Joanne says that Ella will never live this down. Pictures were taken by witnesses on the scene and are now viral on numerous social media networks. Ella’s mom says to NYDailyNews.com, “We’ll be bringing those pictures out at her wedding.” Joanne continues to say that Ella will now be forced to be stuck with a Nokia phone. Wow, thanks, Mom!
After Ella was freed by two firefighters pulling her out by each arm, DailyMail.co.uk reveals her admitting, “I wasn’t really even stuck, I just need somebody to help lift me out but my mum got all panicky. When they pulled me out I ran straight home and jumped in the bath. I think it was just water but I wasn’t taking any chances.” Good thinking, Ella. Everyone within smelling distance appreciated that, as well.
Let’s all learn from Ella not to be careless with our cell phones around drains. And if we do happen to drop it into one of those horrid drains, don’t do as Ella and wedge ourselves in the drain trying to find it.
