Idina Menzel Should Win An Award For Best Sportsmanship

It is amazing how someone like Idina Menzel can have a fantastic career, yet doesn’t become a household name until there is a flub created by the likes of John Travolta.

In case you missed the 86th Annual Academy Awards, the 42-year-old actress was set to perform her Billboard Chart hit, “Let It Go,” when John Travolta introduced her as “Adele Dazeem.” Imagine waiting on stage, nervous as you await to sing before such an elite live audience as well as millions of television viewers, microphone in hand, waiting for your cue, only to hear someone else’s name announced.

“That threw me for a minute, but then I just got back on track and reminded myself of where I was,” Menzel admitted to Billboard.com.

Her flawless performance is proof of just that.

Idina, who was born in Queens, began singing at the age of 15 when her parents divorced. She became a wedding and bar mitzvah singer, and continued working as such for several years. However, Menzel got her first big break with her role as Maureen Johnson in the Broadway musical Rent in 1995. That is where she met her husband, actor Taye Diggs.

After years of her career continuing to soar, Menzel won a Tony Award in 2004 for Best Leading Actress in a Musical in Wicked Witch of the West. Most currently, she is the voice of snow queen, Elsa, in Disney’s film Frozen. That is what lead Idina to singing the Academy Award-winning song, “Let It Go.” The song reached No. 9 on Billboard, making Idina the only Tony Award winner to make the top 10 on the Billboard 100 chart. Although most people are not aware of that fact. It wasn’t until Travolta made his blunder that Menzel became a real topic of conversation. In fact, she has even admitted, “Please. I mean, I’ve only benefited from it,” reports Billboard.

That is what you call being a good sport. In fact, Travolta sent Menzel flowers and a note in which she says, “He was really gracious and sent this gorgeous email, and we’re buddies and it’s all cool.” Wait. HE was gracious? Menzel is obviously the one who is being gracious in her great attitude about the whole situation. This was her big moment performing the award winning song at the 86th Annual Academy Awards, and she is introduced by the wrong name. It has been reported that her birth name is Mentzel, but she changed it to Menzel for pronunciation purposes. That name change was her choice, not Adele Dazeem. Congratulations to Idina Menzel for her incredible award winning talent, and her good spiritedness.
