Oppo Find 7 Smartphone Boasts Of 50 Megapixel Camera, 538 PPI QHD Display

Chinese phonemaker Oppo has launched its new smartphone, the Oppo Find 7 at a launch event earlier today, reports Engadget. The handset packs in a plethora of features aimed at the high end smartphone user and is the newest flagship from the company. Apart from possessing the impressive ability to capture images at 50 megapixels, the phone also boasts of a 5.5 inch QHD (not to be confused with qHD!) 2560*1440 pixel display. This is the probably one of the first smartphones to cram this many amount of pixels on a display this size, giving it an astonishing pixels per inch (PPI) value of 538 as per GSMArena. This display, which Oppo calls Super Screen 2.0, also gets a Gorilla Glass 3 coating for added durability and scratchproof-ness. It can be operated with wet hands as well, boasts Oppo.

Powering the Oppo Find 7 is the newest chip from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 801. The variant of the Snapdragon 801 that made it to the phone houses the MSM8974AC chipset – which is the same as the one found on the new Samsung Galaxy S5. This chipset houses a processor based on the Krait architecture and has quad cores running at 2.5 Ghz each, along with an Adreno 330 GPU chip that takes care of the graphics. Also under the hood is 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage capacity – which is thankfully expandable using micro SD cards. The Find 7 also comes as another slightly downgraded model that gets 2 GB of RAM and “just” a full HD display. More on that later, though.

The main feature of the camera however is its ability to capture 50 megapixel photos. This is done by stitching 10 photos together and combining them all into one huge 50 megapixel image. Unlike Nokia, who actually went ahead and crammed a 41 megapixel sensor inside the Lumia 1020, Oppo decided to rely heavily on oversampling and stitching. The camera module and the sensor on the Find 7 is only a 13 megapixel unit borrowed from Sony. The IMX214 CMOS sensor that the Find 7 gets is the same as the one used on the Sony Xperia Z1. However, ironical as it may seem, the Chinese manufacturer seems to have done a better job at making an overall better cameraphone than Sony with the same sensor. The lens on the Oppo Find 7 sports an F value of 2.0 and also gets an LED flash. The handset can also capture 4K videos and 120 fps slow motion videos. Another impressive capability the phone sports is its ability to capture long exposure shots with an impressive 32 second exposure time! Lest I forget, the handset also gets a 5MP front-facing camera. There is no mention of any kind of optical image stabilization within video capture – which would be a shame, if the feature doesn’t find its way in.

The full blown, Oppo Find 7 gets a 3000 Mah battery which is sorely needed considering the amount of pixels it needs to fire up.

As mentioned earlier, the Find 7 is also available in a slightly downgraded form. This model gets a full HD display and a slightly less potent 2800 Mah battery. The processor too sees a slight change with this one sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 with the MSM8974AB chipset. This is a quad core chipset with its CPU clocked at 2.3GHz with 2GB of RAM. The internal storage capacity has been reduced to 16 GB with this model.

Oppo has also concentrated on the audio capabilities of the Find 7 – with its MaxxAudio speakers claimed to deliver a great bass effect. It also bundles an app called MaxxEq with the device that lets users fine tune their audio.

The Oppo Find 7 models are powered by ColorOS 1.2 which is based on an Android 4.3 core.

While I would reserve a final judgment on the device only after I get my hands on a review unit, if you are a hardcore specs-hound, the Oppo Find 7 would be the phone to beat. Oppo is yet to reveal the prices and the availability details regarding the phone.
