Valium the Culprit For John Galliano’s Anti-Semitic Rant?

Valium- side effects may include drowsiness, inability to operate heavy machinery, difficulties with coordination and hating Jews.

Wait, what? Fashion designer and former Christian Dior head honcho John Galliano is claiming valium is to blame for the anti-Semitic rants in Paris that got him fired and ostracized from the fashion community. Galliano made a slew of hateful comments toward a Jewish woman in a Paris venue back in March, referring to the Holocaust and calling another man an “Asian bastard.”

While in the states, this kind of behavior is protected speech, in France, it’s a crime punishable by jail and fines. And Galliano is now facing both:

The 50-year-old designer, who was canned as the creative director of the fashion house after the incident, faces a media frenzy as he enters the 17th Chamber of the Paris Correctional Court… Galliano is now facing six months in jail and more than $33,000 in fines if he’s found guilty of the charge of “casting public insults based on the origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity.”

Unfortunately for Galliano, the damning tirade was caught on tape. His lawyer plans to argue that a combination of liberal pill use including valium as well as alcohol abuse led to the shocking rant:

“He had a triple addiction to alcohol, benzodiazepine (Valium) and sleeping pills…The combined effect of these drugs is a state of complete and utter abandon,” [Lawyer Aurelien] Hamelle said.

Intense work pressures to deliver hit collection after collection caused the designer to drink like a fish, pop Valium “like candy” and take sleeping pills regularly, his lawyer claimed.

“When he was in that state he had no way of knowing or remembering what he said,” she explained.

A verdict is expected in September. Have you ever experienced lower inhibitions after taking something like valium? Do you buy Galliano’s excuse?
