Free Chipotle Meal Coupon: Facebook Hoax Has Some Customers Angry

The Free Chipotle Meal coupon making the rounds on Facebook is a hoax, but that hasn’t seemed to stop diners from trying to bring them in to Chipotle restaurants around the country.

Thousands of people have reportedly clicked and printed an online coupon that claims to be good for one free Chipotle meal anytime between now and March 20. The ad claims that all people have to do is share the image on Facebook and the meal is on the house.

The problem for the nationwide chain is that the Free Chipotle Meal coupon is 100 percent hoax. They are not offering any such deal, and in fact Chipotle chains around the country have reported people trying to use the coupon only to find out the hard way that there is no such thing as a free meal.

The hoax got so widespread that Chipotle even decided to address it on Facebook, writing:

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch – or burrito for that matter. The “repost, tag, and follow for FREE” offer that is floating around the interwebs is A HOAX. Not real. Not from Chipotle. -Joe”

The fake coupon was not without controversy. After Chipotle debunked the coupon it on Facebook, hundreds of commenters criticized the chain for not taking them anyway, and called on Chipotle to honor the fake coupon.

“Don’t matter if it’s a hoax that’s false advertising because even if it’s some hoax your still getting free advertisement from it being passed around,” one user wrote.

There is at least some basis to the Free Chipotle Meal coupon hoax. The chain did once offer free burritos to people who dressed up like a burrito on Halloween, but that promotion ended in 2010.
