‘The Last Of Us’ Is Becoming A Live-Action Movie

One of the biggest games for the Playstation 3 console, “The Last of Us”, is becoming a live-action movie!

Originally reported by Deadline, the popular game by Naughty Dog, creators of the Jak & Daxter Series and Uncharted Series, has been picked up by Screen Gems. Neil Druckmann, the Creative Director for the game, will write the script. The creative architects will be Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, as well as Druckmann and Game Director Bruce Straley. They are teaming up with Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures banner.

The report also included a logline which reads the following:

Hardened survivor Joel teams with young and capable companion Ellie to journey through a radically transformed world some 20 years after an infectious pandemic ravages humanity. The game has won numerous awards and has been a big seller since its release last summer.

Clint Culpepper, president of Screen Gems, had this to say about how the video game to movie adaption came about:

Screen Gems‘ Brian Dukes and Eric Ling brought this game to my attention insisting we go after it, and when I saw the quality of the storytelling, I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay.”

“I am thrilled that SCEA’s Riley Russell was able to get me in front of Neil and Evan Wells to plead my case. Sam and his team at Ghost House round out the perfect team to help realize Neil’s vision.”

Wells called the partnership between Naughty Dog and Screen Gems a “perfect fit”. Since the game released last June, Naughty Dog talked with many companies about making a film. They then said they could not have found better partners who share their creative vision and high standards, until Screen Gems.

“The Last of Us” released last year to critical acclaim. Considered one of the best games of 2013, it was praised for its character development, bleak world, and emotional storytelling. The primary fault, that most reviewers found, was the gaming mechanics did not match up with the narrative. This was kind of stifling because the game came from a company who made the Uncharted Series (which it’s second game in the series is probably the first game that most people relate to watching a movie). Despite that one flaw, the game is still popular. Why it is even relevant today as The Inquisitr previously reported a new addition to the game titled, “Left Behind”. In one of the reports, the game would receive new gameplay. The other reported a release date.

As of now, details on the live-action movie adaption of the video game are very minimal. However, if you want a close-enough adaption of what the movie might be like, The Verge included in their report, a link to Kotaku where the game was turned into a six-hour cinematic.
