Third Graders Caught Smoking Pot In Elementary School Bathroom

Third graders in Sonora, California were caught smoking pot in an elementary school bathroom. Police are still attempting to determine how the children found smoking marijuana, actually got a hold of the drug. Medical cannabis is legal in the state, but only for adults with a prescription signed by an accredited physician.

Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson told local media that a nine-year-old and two 8-year-olds were caught smoking pot by another student who happened upon the trio in the Sonora Elementary School restroom. School officials contacted law enforcement officers after the student reported the elementary school pot smokers to the principal’s office. The three children were released to the custody of their parents after being interviewed by police.

Police officers are still investigating the source of the marijuana found at the elementary school. While the officers believe that someone could have supplied the Sonora Elementary School third graders with the pot, they have not yet ruled out the possibility that the drugs could have come from a parent. According to Chief Stinson, parents can be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor if their actions are deemed irresponsible or careless. The 33-year veteran law enforcement officers said the Sonora third graders are the youngest pot smokers he has encountered during his career.

Sonora drug prevention teacher Sarah Sommarstrom typically works with seventh and eighth grade students on drug issues. She was quite shocked to hear about the third graders smoking pot in the elementary bathroom. “I don’t even know how to begin talking with third graders about the use of drugs and alcohol. Have to think the parents. Where are the parents in their lives, are the kids going home alone after school and for how long, and are the parents using,” Sommarstrom told local media.

California elementary school administrators are not divulging particulars about the case of possible punishment of the third graders. The children could be suspended or expelled, as per the school district’s zero tolerance of drugs and alcohol policy.

Parents of other third graders are shocked about the incident, many of which are calling for the expulsion of the bathroom pot smokers. A majority of parents at the elementary school also want law enforcement officers to continue with their investigation and ultimately discover how the drugs reached the little hands of the trio of young tokers. The Sonora Elementary School pot smoking case has been forwarded to the Tuolumne County Probation Department.
