Harry Styles Considered For ‘Wicked’

Harry Styles, of the hit boy-band One Direction, is considered for a role in upcoming film, Wicked.

Sugarscape reports that the higher-ups at Universal have their eyes on Styles for the part of Fiyero. On Broadway, Fiyero, originally played by Norbert Leo Butz, is the primary romantic lead for Elphaba (originally played by Idinza Menzel), but also Galinda (originally played by Kristen Chenoweth) earlier in the play. However, the play’s initial reception was back in the 90s. The original cast are mostly in their 40s now. It would be quite off to see them perform as college kids at their advanced age.

Styles is already a heartthrob among the younger ladies and a member of a successful singing boy-band group, so why not try acting? Still, his interest in acting is still just a rumor, but it is a strong enough rumor for Universal to take action. A statement was even made about what Harry acting meant to them:

Harry is very focused on his singing career but there’s a real buzz about him. Movie makers see him as a new Zac Efron and think he would be a perfect casting for a movie musical.

For those who don’t remember, Zac Efron rose to fame being the male lead in the High School Musical trilogy by Disney. He was also in the film adaption of another Broadway play, “Hairspray”. However, it seems that Zac hasn’t been doing so well, especially with when it comes to alcohol. Let’s not forget that he is now 26 years old. That may be considered “too old” to play a hip and cool boy-toy who is simply “dancing through life.” Not to mention, the similarities between Zac and Harry are too similar on an acting platform. It is no surprise why Universal would even say Harry is the new Zac.

However, in a report by UPI, Universal‘s rival entertainment giant, Harvey Weinstein, also has their interest on Styles. He did joke to The Sun that he’d love to make Style’s a star, but Harry would need to date all three of his daughters first because they think he is “extremely handsome”.

There is also the issue that if Styles accepts the role, it might be seen as a sure-fire sign for One Direction breaking up. Harry and band mate, Liam Payne, have denied the band was breaking up amid a flurry of rumors they were going to.

If the rumors do prove true and Harry does accept the part to be in the movie adaption of Wicked, he will probably be paired with another actress who is considered for the part of Elphaba, Lea Michele.
