Angelina Jolie’s Unique Reason Behind Oscars Gown

It’s no surprise that Angelina Jolie was named one of the best dressed at the Oscars. That said, that’s not where the interesting part lies within the news of her sought after Oscar gown. Like most things Angelina Jolie involved herself in, there was a very thoughtful and specific reason behind her unique choice for the red carpet.

Although Jolie looked absolutely stunning in her Elie Saab Haute Couture Oscar dress, the selection behind the gown was said to be deeply personal. For the actress this appearance at the Oscars was a bit different. She wasn’t attending the show as a nominee, instead she was attending as a woman who survived a double mastectomy following a health scare.

According to E!’s source, Jolie wanted the dress to represent just how strong and healthy she is at the moment. The source added that the selection, “was an empowering outfit.”

For most of the night Angelina Jolie was seen at her partner Brad Pitt’s side. Pitt was there to support 12 Years a Slave, which he earned an Oscar for by producing the film under his Plan B banner. However, the ceremony meant more to the couple than winning an Academy Award or experiencing a fun night out.

“It was a big night for her and Brad [Pitt] and she wanted to send a message that while she’s had a difficult time because of her health, she is now feeling fantastic.”

The insider continued to explain the importance behind Angelina Jolie’s dress:

“She wanted to show off her body to prove that she is feeling great after having a double mastectomy. It was important to her that people see that she is as confident as she was before the surgery.”

During the ceremony a clip of Angelina Jolie was shown accepting this year’s Governors Award, which took place a while back. Angelina Jolie was selected as the recipient due to her humanitarian efforts.

Although the actress had a lengthy and touching speech, the Oscars chose to highlight the small tribute and thanks Jolie gave to her late mother Marcheline Bertrand.

“My mother loved art. She loved film. But whenever it had meaning she had a point in telling me that is what a film is for. “And to stand here today means I did as she asked and if she were alive she would be very proud. So thank you for that.”

Angelina Jolie’s mother died at the age of 58 in 2007 from ovarian cancer. Here’s her full speech:
