Cate Blanchett Wins Oscar Despite Woody Allen Ties

Cate Blanchett managed to win an Oscar despite the fact that the role that earned her the award was central to a Woody Allen creation.

The famous actor and director has been coming under fire over the last few months thanks to his step-daughter coming forward with claims of sexual abuse. That is why the main question surrounding Blanchett was whether or not she would thank Allen if she did indeed win the “Best Actress” award.

Some people actually believed that Cate should have made a point to not thank—and even condemn—the man who was instrumental in getting her the lead in Blue Jasmine. Depending on how strongly those people felt, they were likely disappointed considering that she did indeed thank Woody Allen.

Cate Blanchett did thank the director in a way that should keep the critics at bay because she only touched on him briefly and then moved on to a long list of colleagues. The actress has been the front runner for the award for quite some time, but there were some who believed the Academy might find a way to whitewash Blue Jasmine because of the allegations by Dylan Farrow against Woody.

Cate has attempted to get some distance between herself and the controversy by calling it a “family matter.” Attending the Santa Barbara International Film Festival last month, Blanchett gave a brief statement about the situation saying:

“It’s obviously been a long and painful situation for the family, and I hope they find some sort of resolution and peace.”

Blanchett also managed to take some focus off of Woody Allen by being her usual charming self during her acceptance speech and during interviews after the award show. The actress even managed to likely get CNN in trouble by dropping an F-bomb on live television.

Talking to the press following the award ceremony, Cate found a colorful way to answer a reporter’s question. “I wanted to ask you about the fact that you’re the first Australian to ever win [Best Actress],” said the reporter, before Blanchett playfully cut in with, “And don’t you f–king forget it!”

During the same round of interviews, Blanchett sort of explained her comments during her acceptance speech when she said “Julia, hashtag suck it.” As an explanation, the Blue Jasmine star simply said, “It happened in the bar with Ms. Roberts, and that’s all I’m prepared to say.”

When you get to take home the Oscar for Best Actress like Cate Blanchett did, you’re afforded a little leeway.
