Chael Sonnen VS Wanderlei Silva: Could The UFC Fight Be Cancelled?

Could Chael Sonnen VS Wanderlei Silva be cancelled? The UFC fighter known as the American Gangster claims his opponent has not even signed up for the proposed match.

In a related report by The Inquisitr, the UFC 173 fight Lyoto Machida VS Vitor Belfort was cancelled because Belfort couldn’t get waiver for his usage of performance enhancing drugs.

Regardless of the controversy, Sonnen believes this new fight card will be great:

“This is an incredible fight. First off, Chris Weidman is the undefeated, undisputed middleweight champion of the world, taking out the all-time pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva famously. Lyoto Machida has never looked better since he’s come down to 185 pounds. He’s undefeated with a knockout of Mark Munoz, a unanimous decision over Gegard Mousasi and he’s a former light heavyweight world champion. When you talk about superfights, you’re talking about a champion from one weight class taking on a champion from another weight class. You want a superfight? On May 24, you’re getting one.”

But Chael Sonnen’s drugs usage is also well known in the MMA world, and he was also granted a therapeutic-use exemption for testosterone-replacement therapy (TRT) by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Unfortunately for these UFC fighters, the state recently voted to ban TRT usage in Nevada and UFC 173 happens to be taking place in Las Vegas.

Sonnen had previously been suspended by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) after being tested for elevated testosterone levels. But Sonnen claims he his medical reason for TRT was being diagnosed with hypogonadism in 2008, so CSAC reduced his suspension.

Despite this history, Sonnen does not have an problem with the change in Nevada’s TRT policy:

“The rules are the rules – that’s it. Yesterday, it was legal, so quit complaining. Today, it’s illegal. That’s it. Quit complaining. End of conversation. Testosterone’s out.”

But this decision in Nevada came after the choice to move Chael Sonnen VS Wanderlei Silva to Brazil. Silva apparently wanted the match relocated, but the odd part is that he still hasn’t signed a contract according to Sonnen:

But it’s possible this all just pre-fight hype considering the bad blood between the two. After all, Sonnen has lost his chance at the UFC middleweight championship belt twice to Silva in the past. Still, it’s speculated on some websites that “drama behind the scenes [may] deprive the fans of this intriguing fight.”

What do you think about the rumors surrounding Chael Sonnen VS Wanderlei Silva? Do you agree with the change in TRT policy?
