Kate Upton Swimsuit Cover: Carol Alt Doesn’t Get The ‘Hullaballoo’

Kate Upton may be the hottest swimsuit model of the moment, but one of the original supermodels who helped pave the way for a generation of attractive young women to make previously unimaginable sums of money posing for magazine covers and fashion shoots, doesn’t think Kate is anything special.

Carol Alt, the 53-year-old host of the Fox News program A Healthy You & Carol Alt, graced the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1982, 10 years before Kate Upton was born and 29 before Upton appeared on the first of her three Swimsuit Issue covers.

But she just doesn’t get the appeal of the 21-year-old blonde, ascribing Upton’s success not to her looks, charisma or voluptuous figure, but to “social media.”

“What I don’t understand with Kate is what’s all the hullaballoo,” said Alt in a recent interview.

While Kate Upton hasn’t publicly responded to Alt’s barbs directed her way, obviously social media has played a significant role in her success. Nonetheless, Kate did not open her own Instagram account until last week.

Still, Carol Alt is not impressed.

“There are many covers of Sports Illustrated, one girl was just wearing a bottom, no top. I don’t get what all the hullabaloo is,” said the 1980s fashion icon in a recent interview. “I think what it is is that in this moment there’s just so much social media and that’s why she’s had more word of mouth than anybody.”

Alt’s remarks this week are not the first time she has taken a potshot at Kate Upton. In December, she gave an interview in which she called Upton a “large size” model.

“I don’t think she’s in any way fat or overweight or anything. She’s just more large-sized than fashion models are,” Alt said in her December jibes at Kate Upton. “Once she got the cover, she was already in a position to move forward. Of course, the cover was just a fluke because nobody knows who gets the cover.”

The remarks about Kate Upton’s alleged “large size” seem especially inappropriate coming from the host of a TV health program. Kate Upton’s reported height and weight is listed at 5’10” and 135 pounds.

That translates to a body-mass index of 19.4, easily inside the healthy “normal” range recommended by the Center For Disease Control. The minimum normal BMI is 18.5, and the maximum before a person is considered medically “overweight” is 24.9.

Kate Upton is living proof that, especially in the backbiting, brainless world of fashion, people love to say nasty things about other people who became successful by breaking a mold. There is no question that Upton’s curvaceous physique sets her apart from the boyish, anorexic body type that dominates the fashion industry.

Among other insults, Kate Upton has been called “fat” by the fashion blogger “Skinny Gurl,” while Victoria’s Secret “Creative” Director Sophia Neophitou ripped her as “like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”
