WNBA star Skylar Diggins has been known as quite the star when it comes to the basketball court. One of her biggest qualities immediately as she entered the WNBA was clearly her looks. The 23-year-old Tulsa Shock Guard has made herself known over the last year. So it should come as no surprise that she caught the eye of Sports Illustrated.
Diggins was drafted in 2013 by the Shock and has made a relatively good impact for the team thus far. Diggins has one year pretty much under her belt, and averaged around nine points a game and three assists in 2013.
Diggins has made a lot of rounds for the WNBA and even participated in the NBA Celebrity All-Star game and set out on a mission to shut down the two-time MVP, Kevin Hart. She managed to do so, yet Hart was still voted the MVP anyway even in a loss. He ended up giving his MVP trophy away to the Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who just killed everyone in the game.
It came as no surprise that Diggins was a huge media darling all of NBA’s All-Star Weekend. Every business tends to like to promote the Superstar of the team and put them in the spotlight more often.
Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue turns 50 years old this year. Can you imagine that? It is older than I am by almost double. It would obviously be a huge honor for any woman to be in this issue, so obviously Miss Diggins felt accomplished being part of it. Only being in the WNBA and quickly being tapped to be in the issue is a big deal.
The WNBA has been hoping to bring in women like Diggins who were good at what they did, but were also very good looking. It’s easy to market that of course. They want the girls to come off tough and great at what they do, while at the same time they need looks to sell tickets at times.
It’s tough to make people care about women playing basketball in the same clothes guys wear while playing. It’s especially hard to make them care about female basketball when the men are playing far more competitive and exciting games full of athleticism. The crowd pops for WNBA games when a simple dunk happens. This can be seen in the NBA every night in a multitude of games.
Naturally Diggins being used the way she is is terrific for her, but also for the WNBA. So don’t be surprised to see more of her.
Other female athletes such as USA Soccer star Alex Morgan join Skylar Diggins in the 50th Annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, You can trust me when I tell you, it’s a must-see magazine as always. This issue will definitely be worth the buy.
