Cabbage Patch Kids Headed Back to TV: Can They Woo Today’s Kids?

Are you ancient enough to have had a Cabbage Patch Kids doll while they were still next to near impossible to get and there were riots and fistfights over the ugly, baby powder scented dollies?

Dating myself, the craze occurred right smack over my fifth birthday. And when I look at iPods and the newer gaming consoles, it seems farfetched that the Cabbage Patch Kids craze could ever captivate the attention of kids accustomed to such innovations. But a script for a reincarnation of the now-classic franchise reportedly being put together, and a new animated TV special featuring the Cabbage Patch Kids is in the works.

THR posted some initial details about the project:

The Cabbage Patch Kids could be headed to the small screen again in a special that might be produced by Galen Walker, who is producing a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film for Paramount.

Original Appalachian Artworks, which owns the brand, said Monday it has sold TV rights to Walker along with CWA Carlin West Agency, a company created by Carlin West, a former executive with 4Kids Entertainment.

No news on when the Cabbage Patch Kids special might air.
