Sam Wheeler: College Wrestler Suspended For Slur Against Gay Football Player Michael Sam

Sam Wheeler found out the hard way that his intolerance of openly gay football player Michael Sam will not be tolerated.

The Kent State wrestler took to Twitter this week to give his reaction to Sam coming out, which included spewing homophobia and getting into arguments with other users.

“I can’t even watch sportscenter today because all there talking about is Marcus Smart or that f*g from mizzou….” he wrote.

Wheeler then had some more testy exchanges with other Twitter users.

“Oh geez I got all these f*g boys mad at me now,” he wrote.

The Kent State wrestler found out quickly that his homophobia doesn’t pay, and was reportedly suspended from the team.

Wheeler also took down his Twitter account, though the blog Outrage DC published a screen capture of the statements.

Sam Wheeler even prompted his university to respond to the statements.

“We are aware of the insensitive tweets by one of our student athletes,” KSU Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen said in a statement. “On behalf of Kent State University, we consider these comments to be ignorant and not indicative of the beliefs held by our university community as a whole. This is an educational opportunity for all of our student-athletes.”

Wheeler’s coach, Jim Andrassy, noted that the wrestler is sorry for what he said, but still needs to face discipline.

“As an alum of Kent State University and as Sam’s head coach, I was surprised and offended by what I read on Twitter,” said Andrassy. “I have spoken to Sam personally, and while he is remorseful, he will be suspended indefinitely while we determine the best course of action moving forward.”

While Sam Wheeler may have gotten his knocks in, Michael Sam will likely get the last laugh. After leading the SEC with 11.5 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss this year — and taking home SEC defensive player of the year honors — he’s expected to be a mid-round NFL draft pick.
