Aliona Savchenko In Sensational Shocking Pink Outfit: Isn’t That A Gay Color, Mr. Putin?

Aliona Savchenko and her partner Robin Szolkowy really stole the show in the pairs short program with a routine set to the music of “The Pink Panther.”

And it wasn’t only pink music, as Savchenko wore a very becoming hot pink, body-hugging outfit to maintain the theme. Even in the commentary box, Johnny Weir was showing off in a sporting a neon pink jacket while overseeing the action.

Savchenko and Szolkowy are four-time pairs figure skating world champions, although this time they could only manage second place.

Szolkowy said

“It is really good for our sport, for figure skating, to bring some color and some new ideas. The only two colors in this competition are yellow from the Italian team and the pink from Aliona. The rest is just black.”

Szolkowy believes that innovative costumes and interesting performances can help to elevate pairs skating to a higher level of awareness. Anything that adds color instead of the black or dark-themed outfits has to be a good.

Some others also decided to go for some more color. Canada’s Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch included a dash on pink, and the Italians, Stefania Berton and Ondrej Hotarek wore bright yellow. But the majority of the 20 teams competing wore mainly black outfits.

Savchenko said for figure skating, you need something new. “You need to show what you have. Our routine and costume is funny. For me it is more fun. I feel really good in this outfit and this program. We need to do something different.”

So far, Russia has only managed one gold medal to date — in the team figure skating event

Neither of the USA pairs expect to get a medal, but both were pleased with their performances.

It’s ironic that Aliona Savchenko’s outfit was such a sensation, considering that shocking pink is the color traditionally associated with the gay community.

Coincidence — or a message?
