‘Dallas Buyers Club’ Forced Matthew McConaughey To Become A Hermit

Dallas Buyers Club ultimately forced star Matthew McConaughey to make some drastic changes to his daily routine.

To properly prepare for the role of Ron Woodroof in the acclaimed drama, the actor had to drop a considerable amount of weight. Not only did he alter his eating habits and exercise routines, McConaughey said he essentially cut himself off from the rest of the world.

“It actually changed my whole lifestyle. I became a hermit. I was becoming a scientist on Ron Woodroof. This is an anarchic character. Keep the businessman, you’ll get the crusader. Keep the son of a b****, you’ll get the humanity,” the Dallas Buyers Club star recently told the New York Times.

Matthew McConaughey also took a moment to discuss the amount of weight he lost to portray Ron Woodroof. The actor admitted that he initially didn’t know how many pounds he should drop before filming the flick.

“I thought, probably 30, and I got to 30, and some people were like, ‘You’re a little thin.’ And I knew, ‘Well, this isn’t enough,’ because Ron Woodroof looked more than a little thin. And then I just kept going,” he explained.

The Dallas Buyers Club star said that losing that much weight ultimately took its toll on his family. Matthew McConaughey also admitted that seeing himself on the big screen was a little unsettling and very surreal.

“The first time I saw myself on screen I thought I looked like a reptile. It was an initial shock but I was able to shake that for the movie. My family saw my weight loss day by day, so they didn’t have that shock — but I look back and I think perhaps it wasn’t the easiest on them,” the actor explained to the publication.

He added, “It was tough, but what I lost physically down below, I gained up top. I felt incredibly clear-headed and purposeful, and on set there were no starvation dramas. I just wanted to get on with the job and tell this incredible story.”

The award-winning drama is now available on home video, though a number of people decided to check out the flick ahead of schedule by downloading it from torrent sites. The folks at Voltage Pictures were understandably unhappy about this fact, prompting producers to file a lawsuit against 31 anonymous torrent users.
