Shaun White Bows Out of Slopestyle Due to Course Problems and Previous Injuries

In looking at the bleachers in Rosa Khutor Extreme Park, the location seemed void of fans. Those that have attended cheered for the competitors representing their countries. Some may wonder if Shaun White’s announcement to withdraw from the slopestyle course is connected with the obvious lack of attendance.

Other participants acknowledge White’s notoriety, as no doubt snowboarding enthusiasts from around the world are familiar with the fans of the athlete. Though he had planned on participating in the slopestyle event, many did not expect him to achieve medal status. However, White voiced obvious concerns about the course.

Slopestyle is essentially a speed event down the side of a mountain. Along the way, boarders encounter bumps, rails, and perform angled jumps. During trials, White hurt his wrist on one of the ramps that contestants viewed as “obnoxiously tall.” Following initial complaints by competitors, Olympic maintenance engineers took complaints under advisement and made changes daily.

However, White has other reasons for sparing himself the possible dangers of the slopestyle, White has suffered a number of injuries this season, from which he continues recovering. Reports indicate that White recently jammed his wrist, in addition to having an injured shoulder and ankle. Despite these set-backs, White fully intends on competing in the half-pipe next Tuesday.

The halfpipe course consists of a large hollow ice shell having 22 foot tall sidewalls. Though the event also carries inherent dangers, the hazards are not directly related to the course. Most of the activity involves tricks performed by the boarders, which also provides Shaun White with the opportunity to show the judges and fans what he does best.

Regardless of Shaun White’s reasons, some are disappointed that he waited until seemingly the last minute before pulling out of the event. Chas Guldemond, representing the American team, told reporters that he fully expected White to pull out much earlier in the year. Perhaps Shaun White thought that despite injuries he might capably perform on the course and changed his mind.

Hopefully, Shaun White will be in the best form possible to compete in the event for which he has gained fame. Fans from around the world will be watching to see if the popular competitor made the right decision in reserving himself for the half-pipe.

The men’s halfpipe qualifications are schedule to start on Tuesday, February 11, while the slopestyle finals will be on Saturday, February 8.
