Lady Gaga Reveals That 2013 Left Her Feeling Very Depressed

Lady Gaga was definitely feeling a little down in the dumps towards the end of 2013.

Anyone who followed the “Applause” singer’s career last year is painfully aware of the trials and tribulations associated with the release of ARTPOP. Not only did she part ways with her long-time manager Troy Carter, she also had to contend with lackluster sales and a fair amount of critical backlash.

Not surprisingly, all this negativity took its toll on Lady Gaga’s mental and emotional well-being. During a conversation with the folks at Harper’s Bazaar, the singer admitted that she was extremely depressed at the end of 2013.

“I became very depressed at the end of 2013. I was exhausted fighting people off. I couldn’t even feel my own heartbeat. I was angry, cynical, and had this deep sadness like an anchor dragging everywhere I go. I just didn’t feel like fighting anymore. I didn’t feel like standing up for myself one more time — to one more person who lied to me,” she explained.

The singer continued, “Depression doesn’t take away your talents — it just makes them harder to find. But I always find it. I learned that my sadness never destroyed what was great about me. You just have to go back to that greatness, find that one little light that’s left. I’m lucky I found one little glimmer stored away.”

Although things definitely seemed a little grim for Lady Gaga towards the end of 2013, she made a conscious decision to get everything back on track this year. The singer said she found that “one molecule” that was left inside her soul and began rebuilding from there.

Mother Monster previously stated that several people took advantage of her last year, a fact that ultimately resulted in some problems with the release of ARTPOP. Lady Gaga said that she intends to keep those people out of her life going forward.

“I realized that it’s my own fault that people take advantage. I should be around people who cherish my talents, my health, my time. I’m not a pawn for anyone’s future business. I’m an artist. I deserve better than to be loyal to people who only believe in me because I make money,” she told the publication.

Lady Gaga is ready to get things back on track in 2014. Not only is she preparing to tour the world in support of ARTPOP, there’s also reportedly a new single looming on the horizon. Rumors suggest that she’s working on a new album with producer DJ White Shadow as well.

“I know you’re anxious for more ‘ARTPOP.’ I am working so so so so hard and the wait will be worth it. We are 100 percent back on track and I’m busy creating behind the scenes. I miss you so much!” she told her fans.
