‘Fault In Our Stars’ Author John Green Reacts To Trailer

Despite the controversy surrounding The Fault In Our Stars poster, the critical reception for the newly released trailer for Josh Boone’s adaptation of the young adult novel has been fair. The biggest reception comes from the novel’s author John Green, who stuck up for the controversial poster, and has now given his seal of approval of the first trailer of the film.

The Fault In Our Stars is a young adult story starring Divergent’s Shailene Woodley and Carrie’s Ansel Elgort. The story revolves around two teens who meet at a cancer recovery group. One is in remission while the other is still fighting to live. It is narrated by 16-year-old Hazel as she deals with her parents, falling in love for the first time, and dealing with her brave battle.

As we see from the trailer, Josh Boone has taken a cue from the book and hasn’t gotten rid of the poignancy that the first person narrative brings. When thinking about the novel and what is represents to youth and the harsh realities of dealing with cancer, it looks like it’s a spot on portrayal.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the author agreed that Boone’s representation is on point, having said:

“It’s difficult to say to people, ‘go see this movie that’s about sick kids—you’re going to have a really good time. But you are. I think the answer is to make something that, even when it’s sad, is not depressing. The great thing about the trailer is that you emerge from watching it feeling invigorated and encouraged. And hopefully excited.”

Although Green didn’t have to wait as long as we did to see the trailer for The Fault In Our Stars, it seems like he had a reaction that was similar to fans of the novel.

“I couldn’t let myself feel anything other than anxiety until the last frame of the trailer where [Shailene] says ‘okay.’ Then I was like, yeaaaaah! I really loved it. It’s everything I wanted the trailer to be.”

It isn’t a surprise that The Fault In Our Stars film is an accurate representation. When we spoke to Josh Boone, even before he started filming, the director was very aware of the novel’s fans and the impending expectation that needed to be met.

“I still can’t believe I get to go make it. They just really liked my version of that movie. They liked what I came and said I was going to do with it, so we’re going to start shooting on August 26. The book is just so important to so many people that I want to make sure it’s as truthful as it can be.”

The Fault In Our Stars opens in theaters on June 6.
