Low-Carb Diets: How Paleo Could Change Your Life

Low-carb diets aren’t anything new; we all try to keep up with the constant barrage of new fad-diets which come and go and with new studies offering the latest theory on what’s healthy for humans.

One of the most recent, and highly successful, fad-diets is the Paleo (or “caveman”) diet. It follows the principle of eating little to no carbs but also bans grain (or anything derived from it), legumes, and dairy products.

Sound restrictive? Maybe, but according to Paleoists, of which there are many, the result of the restrictions is very special. The thinking behind it is that humans exist best on a diet resembling that of a typical hunter-gatherer. After all, man, since the beginning of time, existed on totally non-processed foods which he caught, found or hunted.

The advent of agriculture and farming saw the introduction of grains, like wheat, spelt, rye and legumes, such as green beans — basically, anything that needs to be heavily processed in order for humans to be able to consume it.

Paleo is a low-carb diet which claims that grain is bad for you and needs to be cut out of your diet completely, replaced by free-range eggs, poultry, meat and lots of fruit, nuts, and vegetables. With the Paleo diet, you eat natural food like our ancestors did, four or five times a day.

Paleoists swear that along with a little light exercise, the Paleo diet can and will change your life forever. They allege that you know if someone is a Paleoist as they emit what is called the “Paleo glow,” a kind of higher, purer existence and a shine.

But keeping to the restrictive rules of the Paleo diet takes some getting used to. No more sugar, pasta, rice, crackers, cookies, cake, beans, donuts, ice-cream, milk, cheese; it all sounds like too much. Such is the price of being healthy and. as Paleoists will tell you, there’s nothing as healthy as the Paleo diet.
