100 Tweet Apology: Man Uses Twitter to Avoid Defamation Fine

Posted: June 2, 2011

A defamation case in a Malaysian court has ended with an interesting settlement stipulation.

Twitter user Fahmi Fadzil was accused of using the microblogging service to defame the former employer of a friend. While the contents of Fadzil’s original tweet have not been widely published since the case began to draw international attention, one can only assume they were relatively harmful to the media company Fadzil is accused of defaming on Twitter.

Fadzil was able to avoid fines for the Twitter transgression, but he was ordered to send the same tweet 100 times in compliance with the out of court settlement. Throughout the day, Fadzil has- along with the tweets in his timeline, randomly posted:

I’ve DEFAMED Blu Inc Media & Female Magazine. My tweets on their HR Policies are untrue. I retract those words & hereby apologize

As of now, Fadzil is up to 41 out of the 100 tweet apologies stipulated by the settlement. But the case hasn’t turned out all bad for the Twitter user- he’s also up to nearly 5,000 followers.
