It looks like Disney is getting ready to go full steam ahead for the promotion of what’s said to be their most anticipated film. Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie in her first on-screen role since her 2010 bomb The Tourist. For Disney it’s the first reboot that relates to the tale of Sleeping Beauty, and the first time they’re focusing on a live animated version about the characters.
In the film the Sleeping Beauty tale is told through a unique perspective given Jolie’s role as Maleficent. For the first time the story is told through the eyes of its villain. Jolie, who is used to playing interesting roles looks especially magnetic and captivating as the green-eyed woman.
The official synopsis for Maleficent is as follows:
“The untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman with stunning black wings, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army of humans threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the king of the humans and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom – and to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.”
Disney has decided to release a new trailer for Maleficent and it looks like the film keeps on getting better and better. Instead of leaving us with a little taste, the studio has decided that audiences need a better look at the magical world of Maleficent. Disney knows that its fans are all about the visuals and in this case they do not disappoint.
The trailer pops with green color, and Jolie’s ominous tone as Maleficent brings a true curiosity to this story. A powerful voiceover sets us up for an even greater story that hasn’t been told before as it announces, “Behind the kiss. Behind the magic. Behind the legend of sleeping beauty. Lies the story of Maleficent.” Cue Maleficent in a truly fantastical and enchanting forest, as she piques the interest of Elle Fanning’s Princess Aurora. Jolie’s voice is used sparingly but when it is featured, it gets the message across clearly, as she warns Princess Aurora that “There is an evil in this world and I cannot keep you from it.”
Although Disney has had its share of great villains it promises that it’s “greatest villain” has come to life. By the time the trailer shows Jolie in all of her Maleficent glory, it’s easy to believe the tagline hook, line, and sinker.
Maleficent hits theaters on May 30.
