Yuengling Ice Cream Returns In February

Yuengling’s Ice cream will be available to consumers beginning next month. The famous family halted production in 1985. However, public demand eventually convinced David Yuengling to bring it back. Although the frozen treat shares its name with an iconic beer, the ice cream contains no alcohol.

The Yuengling family actually started producing the ice cream during prohibition. During prohibition, beer manufacturers were limited to producing.5 percent “near-beer.” To make up for the loss in profits, founder Frank D. Yuengling decided to open an ice cream and dairy plant.

As reported by the company’s website, the ice cream was well-received and became known nationwide. However, the frozen treat was specifically well-known in the Midwest and Northeast.. Although prohibition ended in 1933, and the company resumed their beer production, Yuengling’s ice cream remained an important part of the family business.

The dairy and ice cream plant remained open for 65 years. In 1985 the plant closed, as President Frederick “Fritz” Yuengling’s heirs were not interested in running the business.

In 2013, Frederick’s son David decided to leave his 30-year career to open a new ice cream production plant. He said he always wondered if leaving the family business was the right decision. However, he said he is happy to have “a second chance now.”

As he is committed to providing a healthy product, the ice cream will be free from artificial ingredients and hormones. David is also committed to boosting the local economy. The new plant was built inside an abandoned building in central Pennsylvania. All ingredients will come from local providers and the plant will employ local residents.

David said he has received an amazing outpouring of support from the community and fans of the ice cream. He said he has fond memories of working in the plant as a child and he is happy to bring the iconic ice cream back.

The available flavors will include black and tan (which combines salty caramel and Belgian chocolate), chocolate, chocolate fudge brownie, chocolate marshmallow, chocolate chip, espresso chocolate chip, mint chocolate chip, root beer float, vanilla, and vanilla fudge chunk with pretzels. One quart will cost around $6.

USA Today reports the ice cream will debut in Acme and Weis grocery stores, as well as several independent grocers in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Although Yuengling’s ice cream company shares its name with the family’s beer empire, they have different owners. The brewery is currently owned by David’s cousin.
