Norv Turner To Interview For Minnesota Vikings Offensive Coordinator Position
Norv Turner as Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator? It could happen, sources claim.
The Vikings reportedly have obtained permission from the Cleveland Browns to interview Turner, who currently holds the same position with the Browns. Today, the Vikings named Mike Zimmer as head coach.
The well-traveled Turner has been a head coach with the Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders, and San Diego Chargers and also served as offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, Chargers, and the San Francisco 49ers. He started his NFL coaching career as wide receivers coach for the-then Los Angeles Rams. As an NFL head coach, Norv Turner has a record of 114-122, with one tie.
Turner is still under contract with Cleveland, so he is not out of a job at the moment, but the Browns evidently are okay with him pursuing possible opportunities with other teams while Cleveland conducts its own seach for a new head coach. The Browns fired head coach Rob Chudzinski after one season. The team finished with a 4-12 record, in last place in the AFC North.
Although the Browns finished in 18th place in overall offense this season, according to NFL.com, Turner’s expertise could give the Vikings a boost. “Turner wore out his welcome with the San Diego Chargers, but remains one of the league’s premier coordinators. He helped the Browns finish with the 11th-ranked passing attack last season despite being saddled with quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell after Brian Hoyer tore up his knee. He’d be an interesting fit for the Vikings. Turner has overseen the league’s top rusher in five different seasons and would inherit the best back on the planet in Adrian Peterson.”
The Baltimore Ravens apparently are also interested in Norv Turner to fill the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position but have not yet asked for permission to interview him.
