Jessica Chastain: Merida Photo Joins Jessica Biel, Scarlett Johansson As Disney Princesses

Jessica Chastain’s Merida photo for Disney joins a whole of famous stars who have been Disney Princesses, including Jessica Biel, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, and Taylor Swift.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Disney once tried to change the image of Disney princess Merida, which caused the writer of Brave to accuse Disney of “blatant sexism.”

It might seem an odd choice to have an actress who has played a nymphomaniac and a CIA analyst represent Disney Princess Merida, but if you look at the photo she certainly fits the bill for a grown up version of the Brave movie character. Disney is using this latest photo to advertise its Disney Parks, and the byline besides Jessica Chastain’s Merida reads: “Where your destiny awaits.”

This idea continues a seemingly new Disney tradition. In 2007, Scarlett Johansson was Cinderella at the moment she lost the famous glass slipper. Jessica Biel was Pocahontas in 2008, featuring her running through the woods with a deer. Penelope Cruz danced with Jeff Bridges as Beauty and the Beast in 2011. The last Disney princess to become real was Rapunzel from Tangled as played by Taylor Swift.

So far there hasn’t been any major controversy over these Disney Dream portraits. But Merida was specifically designed to break the mold for the Disney Princess so it’s possible this new picture may not get the same reaction.

What do you think about Jessica Chastain’s Disney Princess Merida photo? Does it portray the character as it should?
