Velveeta Shortage: Is It The Start Of A Cheesepocalypse?

A Velveeta shortage has nacho and mac & cheese lovers alike fretting, as they won’t be able to enjoy their favorite snack, at least for the moment.

Some may blame the cold winter, while others say that rising milk prices are to blame; Kraft Foods, who make the yummy, gooey cheese say they simply can’t keep up with the massive demand for their product.

A spokeswoman for Kraft, Jody Moore, said about the Velveeta shortage:

Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks. Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue.

This isn’t the first, or probably the last food shortage scare in recent years. Remember the Butterball turkey shortage before Thanksgiving? And what about the Twinkie shortage in 2012, which came about following Hostess Brands bankruptcy?

Football fans who are looking to host parties this weekend may have to look for alternative cheesy toppings to satisfy their guests during the half-time break. Or, maybe just look for tasty alternatives altogether.

The fact most Americans rely heavily on Velveeta as their chosen topping, or mixed with pasta, is an issue. So if you are hosting or attending a party this weekend expect lots of salsa on the menu.

With any luck, and perhaps just a little effort from Kraft, the current Velveeta shortage will be short-lived and America’s favorite cheesy stuff will be back on convenience store shelves in no time.

Until then, be brave people and consider serving something healthy to your guests. Perhaps some sliced vegetables with humus, or even something classy like sushi. Share your ‘Velveeta alternatives’ in the comments feed below.
