Caroline Wozniacki And Rory McIlroy Announce Engagement

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy announced their engagement Wednesday.

The PGA champion proposed to Wozniacki as they watched the midnight fireworks at Sydney’s Harbour Bridge.

McIlroy tweeted, “Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!” He attached a picture of a large solitaire diamond.

Wozniacki tweeted, “Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! … I said YES!!!!”

The engagement comes just a few months after rumors surfaced that the couple had broken up. In October, it was suggested that the pair had split after Wozniacki posted a picture of McIlroy sleeping with his mouth open on Twitter.

“Rory was very upset by it and even Serena Williams pointed out – albeit in a joking way – it was a pretty mean thing to do,” a source told the Independent. Another source said that Rory McIlroy wanted to focus on his career after getting some advice from Gary Player, who said that the 24-year-old needed to “find himself a wife that’ll help him, actually almost dedicate her life to him being a success.” Player also said that for a young golfer like McIlroy, he “can’t play with worries” or “have women problems.”

Caroline Wozniacki, however, denied rumors of a breakup.

“I’m so tired of the rumors. They occur every time Rory and I are apart a few days or do not write on Twitter,” the 23-year-old said. “There is nothing in it, and from now on I just think that I will keep my private life private. It is so annoying that the media and the so-called sources constantly spread the rumors. They write just what they want.”

Wozniacki is set to play in the Sydney International Tournament on Sunday and, according to The Guardian, spent her first day as bride-to-be practicing her serves with coach Thomas Hogstedt at Ken Rosewall arena.
