Baby’s Body Found In Duffel Bag At San Antonio Recycling Center

The body of a baby was discovered in a blue duffel bag Monday afternoon in a San Antonio recycling center. An employee discovered the duffel bag while sorting items on a conveyor belt. The recycling center employee at the San Antonio Houston Street Recycle Center discovered the baby around 12:30 PM according to Lisa Doughty, a company spokeswoman.

San Antonio Express reported that officials have not stated whether the baby found was a boy or a girl, but police Sargent Daniel Gonzales said that the baby is believed to be between one and 10 days old.

According to KWTX, once the worker discovered the baby in the duffel bag, the facility immediately stopped operations. Officials say that the baby could have been dumped in the trash sometime between Saturday and Monday morning. The report continued on to say that police have announced that they will be performing an autopsy on the baby’s body to help them in their investigation.

Gonzales stated that if the autopsy proves that the baby was killed prior to the body being discarded, then this case could become a capital murder investigation. He told reporters that the baby in the duffel bag could have come to the center with items collected between Sunday and noon Monday, and the body could have come from San Antonio or an outside county.

San Antonio Express stated that the employee was sorting in the “single stream” area when the duffel bag came across on the belt. Doughty told reporters that the “single stream area “includes household materials such as plastic bottles, paper and glass.”

The San Antonio recycling company is working with police to figure out where the baby may have come from. Doughty said that police have received a list of all the vehicles that went into the center. Until the autopsy is performed, police say that they do not know the cause of death, and they are not excluding the possibility that the baby may have been stillborn.
