Science Shock Discovery: GOD!
While we’re used to scientists bashing and mocking religious people, according to a recent Gallup Poll more and more Americans are returning to God, and apparently so are some scientists too!
It all starts in the eerie world of Quantum Physics, a theory around since before the Second World War. Quantum Physics has made some remarkable and freaky discoveries about the real nature of the world we live in. Through certain tests, it has been proven that the laws of Physics and Quantum Dynamics are actually the basis for a very formidable proof that GOD exists AND created the Universe.
Quantum theory has been proven through a famous experiment called the Double Slit experiment, embedded below in the super understandable YouTube video. The Double Split experiment has proven that the whole universe, which is made up of particles described in the video, only exists based on observation. As you see in the video, the stuff (particles or waves) stays undefined until someone actually looks at it. What that means is that the world exists in a ‘super-state’ because all possible outcomes actually exist until someone ‘observes’ them, and then they get defined into a single state.
There’s a famous thought experiment called Schroedinger’s Cat that illustrates how this works. Imagine you have a lead box, completely sealed from the outside world. Inside the box is a Cat and a vial of deadly poison attached to a mechanism that is controlled by a Geiger counter. If the Geiger counter beeps, the vile is broken, and poison is released to kill the poor kitten instantly.
A Geiger counter is what nuclear detectors work with. They detect radiation from nuclear decay and beep every time they detect some radiation. Next to the Geiger counter mechanism is an atom of a radioactive element with a half-life of five minutes. A half-life is the time it takes for half of the radioactive atoms to decay (release a charged ion). Although we have no idea when each individual atom will decay, we know with incredible accuracy how long it will take half of any group of atoms to decay (this is the basis of carbon dating and is in itself a complete mystery – or rather Miracle). An individual atom could decay immediately or not for a million years.
Now, since we don’t know if this particular atom has decayed or not there is, after 5 minutes, exactly a 50:50 chance that the Cat is either alive or dead! Poor thing! What Schroedinger said is that because this is based on Quantum Mechanics, the cat is both alive and dead until you open the box. So too, light, and thus, all physicality is undefined and in a double “SuperState” until something conscious actually ‘observes’ it.
Now, let’s look back, way way back, to the Big Bang. Until conscious observers came along, the universe continued to develop for supposedly billions of years, but who was there to actually define and ‘observe’ the universe in order to actually make it the wonderful place we live?
So, scientists have proven in the theory known as the PAP or Participatory Anthropic Principle that GOD had to observe the universe and all of physicality in order to bring about it’s existence. Of course, a cat can’t be both alive and dead at the same time, so the observation is the actual creation!
Modern skeptics think that the theory doesn’t prove God exists because if God was there to observe the universe, then he’s also here observing particles and thus the Double Slit test and the measurement problem wouldn’t happen.
Obviously, that is a poor answer because many people who believe in God also believe that the basis of religion is free will and the fact that God removes himself from the world in order to allow people to act freely. Otherwise, if God used his knowledge to control the cosmos, then the past and future would all be predefined by his knowledge of them, and we’d have no free will – and what would be the point of that?
