Mall Carjacking Victim Identified As Lawyer, SUV Recovered

The mall carjacking that left a man dead, as he was trying to prevent two men from stealing his SUV with his wife inside, has been identified and the vehicle recovered.

A shopping trip to the mall ended in tragedy, when the couple was attacked and the man killed, as he tried to protect his wife.

Authorities have identified the victim as 30-year-old Dustin Friedland, a lawyer from Hoboken, New Jersey, according to his LinkedIn profile.

His wife, Jamie Schare Friedland, is listed as an attorney specializing in landlord-tenant law at a firm in New York City. She was not hurt during the mall carjacking.

On Sunday, as the married couple was getting ready to get in their silver Range Rover, they were approached by two individuals, after Dustin had opened the door for his wife and he was walking to the driver side of the car to get inside.

Police say, that’s when the shooting and carjacking took place in the upscale New Jersey mall’s parking lot.

According to the statement from police in Essex County, the 30-year-old was shot in the parking garage of The Mall at Short Hills after 9 pm Sunday. He was pronounced dead at Morristown Medical Center at 11:45 pm.

The two men then drove off in the couple’s SUV, which was found Monday morning in Newark, New Jersey, on a residential street in the city’s southern side, just a few blocks from Interstate 78 and about eight miles from the mall.

Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray says police are still looking for the suspects:

“It obviously was a car with some value. Our police department is out there and I’m sure they’re doing everything that needs to be done.”

The suspects in the deadly mall carjacking are described by police as two black men.

Authorities investigating the mall carjacking in New Jersey have not released surveillance video footage or a description of the suspects.

Police are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the mall carjacking to call (877) 847-7432.
