‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ Sequel Headed To Theaters In 2015

It’s a Wonderful Life is getting a sequel decades after the original hit theaters.

If everything goes according to screenwriters Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton’s master plan, then the follow-up to the holiday classic should hit theaters within the next few years. Variety reports that the sequel is tentatively set for release at some point during 2015.

According to Farnsworth, the script for the It’s a Wonderful Life continuation follows the adventures of George Bailey’s grandson. The writer says the sequel is in the tradition of the original film, though it has a somewhat different twist than the Christmas favorite.

Entertainment Tonight explains that a few actors and actresses from the original flick are in talks for the follow-up. In addition to Jimmy Hawkins (Tommy Bailey) and Carol Coombs (Janie Bailey), Karolyn Grimes (Zuzu) is presently slated to return as an angel.

The actress explained:

“The new film will retain the feeling of the original, and it simply must be shared. I’ve probably read close to 20 scripts over the years suggesting a sequel to ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ but none of them were any good. The script by Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton was wonderful, and I wanted to be involved with his version of the film immediately.”

According to USA Today, the It’s a Wonderful Life sequel tells the story of George Bailey’s unlikable grandson George. Instead of showing him how miserable the world would be if he’d never been born, the angel shows the guy how wonderful everything is without him.

Directed by legendary filmmmaker Frank Capra, the original movie followed the adventures of bank manager George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart). When our hero contemplates suicide, an angel named Clarence (Henry Travers) shows Bailey what the world is like without him. Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, and Thomas Mitchell co-starred in the classic.

Star Partners and Hummingbird Productions are reportedly behind the upcoming sequel. Although producers hope to have the flick ready by 2015, this date isn’t set in stone as of this writing. It’s also unclear who will star as George Bailey’s grandson in the follow-up.

Although the sequel continues to the Bailey family story, this isn’t the first follow-up to come down the cinematic pipeline. The 1990 TV movie Clarence/ followed the helpful angel as he assists another human being who’s down on his luck. The film starred Kate Trotter, Louis Del Grande, and Robert Carradine as Clarence. How easily the world forgets.
