Steve Martin And Angelina Jolie To Receive Honorary Oscars

Steve Martin and Angelina Jolie are among the stars who will attend the fifth honorary Academy Awards event presented by the board of Governors of the Academy of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The event is an Oscar style black-tie dinner, but is private and will not be televised.

Among those to be honored at the event are Angelina Jolie, Piero Tosi and Angela Lansbury. The audience at the event will be around 500 people; other stars like Tom Hanks and Anthony Hopkins will be on hand to assist with the celebrations.

One of the producers of the ceremony, Paula Wagner, said about the event: “This event is a celebration of film, and it is really the beginning of Academy Awards season.”

When the president of the academy, Cheryl Boone, called Steve Martin he was shocked: “I thought maybe a host had fallen out or something,” he said. “I thought maybe they needed a favor or wanted me to introduce somebody.”

Jokes aside, if that’s possible with Steve Martin, the 68-year-old legendary comedian said he was very touched to be receiving the award: “It goes back to the ’80s and ’90s — that all that work was actually registering with somebody in a kind of serious way,” he said.

He then continued to reflect on the early films he appeared in: “I and all the people I worked with, we took it very seriously and we worried a lot about it, so it’s quite a compliment to have it regarded in some way. It’s quite an honor.”

Even though Steve Martin featured in more than 35 movies, and even hosted the Oscars a number of times, he was never actually nominated for an Academy Award.
