‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Recoil: Accepting The Truths Of “John 8:32” Sets Viewers Free [SPOILERS]

All truths were revealed in the latest Sons of Anarchy episode, entitled “John 8:32.” Tara’s cat is out of the proverbial bag, with Jax and the Sons of Anarchy MC all aware of her devilish deals.

The title of episode nine of Sons of Anarchy’s sixth season is a common phrase that has grown from its biblical origins: “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” When you get right down to it, that’s what the latest Sons installment was all about. With the big reveal, Tara is free from the burden of her secret maneuvers and Gemma is free from Jax’s wrath.

The episode began with a continuous cross-cut from Jax and Tara to Gemma and Nero. The former Sons of Anarchy queen is catching her papi up on what went down when he was in holding. Incredulous, Nero tries to be the calming outside influence, first talking to Jax. That doesn’t go to well, with the Sons of Anarchy pres essentially warning the Byz-Lats O.G. to mind his own business. Nero then makes the mistake of going to Tara; he minds his manners, but Tara, now so duplicitous in nature, reveals an entirely different tale to Jax, leading to a fantastic confrontation at Diosa. As Jax and Nero rip each other to pieces in the kitchen, Gemma shows up and implores Happy to break it up.

After some harsh opening words, the conversation switches to revelation: Gemma tells Jax and the other Sons about how Nero had copped to the gun charges in order to spare the Sons of Anarchy the wrath of D.A. Patterson. That shuts Jax up a bit, as does the disclosure of Gemma being forced to consummate in her conjugal visit with Clay. Mama Teller lays it all out: the false pregnancy, the divorce and custody plans, capped off with Margaret Miller’s tacit admission. But Gemma doesn’t tell the head of the Sons of Anarchy table to take her word for it; she encourages Jax to find someone who knows. That someone ends up being Tara’s lawyer, Ally Lowen, who spills the truth in a tense scene inside Unser’s trailer. Lowen calls Tara to let her know Jax is aware of everything and the latest Sons of Anarchy episode closes with her holding one of their sons and a gun in her lap.

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the episode. On the betrayal between Sons of Anarchy president Jackson Teller and Doctor Tara, he pondered the emotional fallout:

“Obviously the betrayal is a deep one, but it’s also a different kind of betrayal for Jax. It’s not like the betrayal of an enemy or a betrayal of a brother. How does he respond to the betrayal of the woman he loves and the mother of his child?”
