Facebook ‘Rape Club’ Gets Police Attention

A Facebook “rape club” has gained police attention in New Zealand. Law enforcement officials say they are looking into a group of young men who’ve formed an online group to boast about luring underage girls and raping them as a group. Unfortunately, police do not seem to yet have hard evidence to prosecute.

As Raw Story reports, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has publicly condemned the men involved in the group as “abhorrent.” He says it will be difficult to take legal action without any victims coming forward to file a formal complaint. Key understands, though, that “it’s a very challenging position for a young woman to put herself in.”

The Auckland-based Facebook “rape club” calls itself “Roast Busters” whose members routinely take to their Facebook page to tout their latest successful rape. Videos on the group’s page have been taken down which showed group members discussing their acts and providing the names of their victims.

As Sky News reports, the Facebook “rape club” members brag about targeting underage girls using social media. Victims have been as young as 13-years-old.

Speaking to local television media, an underage girl who did not reveal her identity says she was a victim of the group. She says they continually gave her alcohol to force her to keep blacking out. “You could say I got raped. I had sex with three guys at one time,” the unidentified girl told media.

Police say the case have stalled. They say it is because victims have been too traumatized to make formal statements about their attacks, but some remain hopeful. Detective Inspector Bruce Scott believes that action can be taken against the Facebook “rape club,” but will need some brave young women to come forward to show other victims the importance of stopping these violent offenders.
