Is Obama Going After Red Solo Cup Rights? Yes, Yes He Is [Video]

Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said Thursday that if President Obama is invited to make crucial decisions about what healthcare plan you’re allowed to choose, there’s nothing stopping him from deciding you can’t use red Solo cups.

Or something.

At a House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday, Blackburn charged Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius with the Affordable Care Act’s inability to allow millions of Americans to keep their existing insurance plans. The counterpoint is that said insurance plans had to fold in light of the new law because the government raised the minimum standard of coverage and many existing policies didn’t mesh.

Anyway, Blackburn said that the government doesn’t have a right to set those minimum standards at all, and compared the ACA’s requirements to the government unilaterally determining what other products and services were right for individual Americans.

“Some people like to drive a Ford, not a Ferrari,” she said during the hearing. “And some people like to drink out of a red Solo cup, not a crystal stem. You’re taking away their choice.”

During an appearance on Fox News Thursday, Blackburn expanded upon this illustration, and said that her quip about red Solo cups was indicative of the “bigger picture” about this new healthcare law.

“I will always go to the mat and fight for freedom, free people, free markets,” Blackburn said. “And I think for the federal government to come in and take away the choice that people have had in the health care market and say, ‘Hey, we don’t like what you’ve been buying, we’re going to make you buy this.'”

She continued:

“What’s the next thing going to be? You can’t buy that Solo cup? You can’t buy an inexpensive blouse? You can’t buy a pair of shoes that cost less than another pair?”

“So do they think that the federal government is going to become the determiner of the cost and set prices of everything that you can buy at a quality that they say is worthy? Come on! This is absolutely ridiculous. I am not going to sit here and let them get by with this.”
