Bette Midler Thinks There’s A ‘Grossness’ To Modern Pop Stars

Bette Midler is the latest celebrity to weigh in on the sexual nature of modern pop stars.

During her appearance on Katie Couric’s talk show, the award-winning actress shared some thoughts about such controversial performers as Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus. Although Midler thinks it’s commendable to push the envelope in terms of creativity, she seems to think that these singers take things a little too far.

“I think there’s a difference between pushing the envelope sexually and pushing the envelope creatively. I think you can be as creative as you want to be… you can roll out old ideas and give them a new coat of paint,” Bette Midler explained to Couric.

She added, “But the idea of whipping out the girls, I don’t know, there’s a grossness to it that is not flattering… to the women themselves.”

Bette Midler isn’t the only person who thinks Miley Cyrus and her fellow performers show too much skin these days. The Inquisitr previously reported that “Roar” singer Katy Perry also believes certain singers spend too much time being overtly sexual.

“I do see myself becoming this, whatever, inspiration out of default right now because it’s such a strange world. Like females in pop — everybody’s getting naked. I mean, I’ve been naked before, but I don’t feel like I have to always get naked to be noticed. But it’s interesting to see,” Perry told NPR.

The singer continued, “It’s like, put it away. We know you’ve got it. I got it too. I’ve taken it off for — I’ve taken it out here and there. And I’m not necessarily judging. I’m just saying sometimes it’s nice to play that card but also it’s nice to play other cards.”

In addition to discussing the current state of pop music, Bette Midler also dished on the continued popularity of her classic Halloween flick Hocus Pocus. The film recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary. If you saw the film when it originally hit theaters, feel free to cringe at that number whenever you’re ready.

“I love it…. We made it before the tidal wave of Halloween happened…. Now it’s huge. It’s huge. Kids, grown-ups, everybody takes part in it. This movie was kind of at the beginning of the wave. We had a great time making it, Kathy Najimy, Sarah Jessica Parker and I, and we laughed the whole time,” Midler explained.
