Last Minute Halloween Costumes: Impromptu Design Ideas From Experts

Last minute Halloween costumes are an annual tradition for the unprepared or for those people who didn’t get a Halloween party invite until the day before, but experts on impromptu costumes have a few handy suggestions.

There are always the standard last minute Halloween costumes — like throwing on a pair of devil horns or a sports jersey — but those are pretty boring, and won’t get much attention at that Halloween party. And isn’t that the point, really?

Luckily, design experts and Twitter users are on hand to share some funny, topical last minute Halloween costume ideas.

You could be a Bag of Emimens by cutting a few holes in a garbage bag, sticking your arms through, and pasting the exterior with pictures of the Detroit rapper. Or you could be one of the many easy-to-make television characters (Liz Lemon just takes comfortable sneakers and an sensible sweater, and Cliff Huxtable just takes any bright 80s sweater).

One of the most popular ideas this year is the Fifty Shades of Grey costume, which entails going to a home improvement store, literally stealing (or buying, if that’s how you like to play it) a bunch of grey paint samples, and attaching them to your body.

It’s an easy idea, but it’s also pretty popular so there’s a good chance you won’t be the only one at the party. But luckily, there’s a quick fix (as long as you’re a guy) to tweak the costume — just wear a crucifix and a grey sweatshirt. If anyone asks, you’re Christian Grey.

Beyonce actually inspired one of the favorite last minute Halloween costume ideas for 2013. She showed up with a simple cardboard cutout colored to look like an Instagram background. Color in the borders with the proper Instagram logo and write in any number of “likes” at the bottom, and you’ve got an instant selfie costume.

Jenee Osterheldt of the Kansas City Star also has a good topical idea — go as America’s favorite fictional brand characters.

She wrote:

“Bryan Greenberg, known for his role on HBOs How to Make It in America, made Halloween so much easier for everyone by pulling out a red plaid shirt and a roll of Brawny paper towels. Honestly, fellas, you can do the same thing with Mr. Clean. Buy a white tee and a small gold hoop earring and paint your brows white. Or you could take a page out of my husband’s book. He keeps a hockey mask on standby. That, coupled with a heavy dark coat, makes you Jason Voorhees.”

YouTube is a bastion of last-minute Halloween costume ideas, including some you can make with just a bed sheet.

Or others that are easy on the pocket book.

If you’re still hard up for a last minute Halloween costume idea, you can always just take Adam Sandler’s advice, make your eyes really wide and go as “Crazy Big Eye Man.”
