Couple Lives In Cemetery, Likes Having Low-Maintenance Neighbors

One New York couple happily lives in a neighborhood of about 70,000 people, and not a single one ever has to borrow a cup of sugar. That might have something to do with the fact that they’re all dead.

Bob Moschetto and his wife Ellen live in a cemetery with their Shih Tzu, two cats, and absolute silence from the 70,000 souls buried there. Morbid? Maybe. But they love it. They’ve lived there 13 years rent-free in exchange for keeping up the property and they have no intention of leaving anytime soon.

“I like to say I live in a gated community,” Ellen told the New York Post.

Bob said that he actually judiciously chose which cemetery he wanted to live in, as well. “There are many cemeteries in Queens. This is one of the best,” he said.

As caretaker, Bob opens and closes the gates, patrols the grounds and keeps trespassers out. He admitted that he doesn’t see a lot of action.

“It’s very quiet. No one here comes knocking on the door to borrow anything,” Ellen told Fox 29.

“We had barbecues where one of our relatives had to take pictures to bring back to work to prove she went to a barbecue in a graveyard,” she also said.

Their grandchildren love it, too.

“I don’t think they know what the headstones are,” Ellen said of the children, who love to play outside. “If they do, it doesn’t affect them. None of them are afraid or spooked.”

Ellen also recalled a time after they had just moved in when she invited relatives over for a barbecue. The main entre? Ribs.

“And I,” Ellen said, “in an unthinking move, made ribs. Everyone was hysterical: ‘Whose ribs?! Where did she dig them up?'”

They have a slightly morbid joke every time someone is buried, as well.

“Oh, look!” Ellen will proclaim. “New neighbors!”

The Moschettos say that they live in an otherwise “normal” neighborhood near Toys ‘R Us and a BJ’s restaurant.
