‘Olympus Has Fallen’ Sequel Heads To London, Gerard Butler Will Return

Olympus Has Fallen performed well enough at the box office earlier this year that the folks at FilmDistrict have decided to put together a sequel with the original cast.

Gerard Butler and the people who survived the first outing will return for the proposed follow-up London Has Fallen. Judging from the title, producers are taking their winning formula across the pond. Countless shootouts and explosions will likely appear in the sequel as well.

According to First Showing, the Olympus Has Fallen sequel brings back Angela Bassett, Radha Mitchell, and Aaron Eckhart as the President of the United States of America. Filming on the project should begin next May. It’s unclear when FilmDistrict intends to release the follow-up into theaters around the world.

The movie continues the adventures of Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Butler), a man who clearly received his training from the Die Hard School of Escaping Certain Death. Instead of battling terrorists on American soil, he squares off against a gang of villains at the funeral for the British Prime Minister.

“Only the President of the United States, his secret service head and an English MI6 agent can save the day,” the folks at Screen Daily recently reported.

Despite receiving lukewarm reviews from critics when it hit theaters earlier this year, Olympus Has Fallen still earned $98 million from moviegoers in the US. With a little help from audiences overseas, the action flick’s worldwide total reached $161 million.

Since Olympus Has Fallen only cost an estimated $70 million to produce, it’s not surprising that FilmDistrict really wants a sequel. This also proves once again that you don’t necessarily need $200 million to craft an enjoyable action-thriller with decent special effects.

If you missed this one in theaters, then check out the official synopsis:

“When the White House (Secret Service Code: ‘Olympus’) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning’s inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President, and avert an even bigger disaster.”

Fuqua’s action flick arrived on DVD and Blu-ray this August. It’s definitely worth a look if you’re into those “one man against countless heavily-armed enemies” movies.
