‘Pokemon X And Y’ DLC Could ‘Ruin The Worldview’, Says Art Director

Pokemon X and Y DLC could ruin the overall feel of the game, according to art director Ken Sugimori. Of course he’s talking about paid DLC for Nintendo’s latest blockbuster, and charging to boost numbers in the Pokemon X and Y Pokedex.

One of the biggest problems with paid DLC is that at times, it just doesn’t seem worth the money you pay for it. For this reason, it is among the video game trends that could make us never want to play the game again, as previously reported by The Inquisitr. You’ve probably seen it before, a special add-on that costs you around $10 and takes about an hour to finish is not a worthwhile investment, and it makes you wonder if anything else for the game is worth the money.

Yes, there are some games out there that sell you extra characters, like Injustice: Gods Among Us, and on the most part it seems worth it. That’s because most fighting games usually offer a variety of ways to play, and the new characters don’t feel like a skin swap of some other characters you’ve probably mastered.

Pokemon X and Y DLC has been held under the same light, and it has been deemed a waste of money to sell Pokemon over the internet individually, mostly because it would either cheapen the game or make the individual pocket monster feel like a ripoff. There is no point in boosting the Pokemon X and Y Pokedex if it takes the fun out of the game.

Ken Sugimori has always said no to the idea of selling Pokemon individually for that reason. Even though everything in Pokemon X and Y was painstakingly rendered to match its 2D art style, the gamer might not see the effort involved, and dismiss it as just another attempt to get more money off a game that has already sold over 4 million copies in its opening weekend.

On the idea of DLC for Pokemon X and Y, Ken Sugimori stated:

“The reason being, is because it’s one of things that could ‘ruin the worldview’ of Pokemon. I believe the reason we don’t simply commercialize [Pokemon], is that it’s a way of protecting the brand, and for this purpose, we have the specialty company called The Pokemon Company. Therefore, suppose we sell a Pokemon for 100 yen, then we must prepare something that is worthy of that 100 yen, along with a reasonable consent for doing so.”

There was a recent promotion that offered rare Shiny Legendary Pokemon for free, and that’s how Ken Sugimori prefers it to be done. Likewise, if there is ever a Pokemon featured in a movie or something that would be nice to see appear in the game, it will likely be given away as bonus content so as to avoid commercializing Pokemon X and Y with DLC.
